On Thursday 31 March, encompass and HSCNI leadership came together for the Reignite conference.

The goal of the event was to re-energise the programme  by providing leaders with an opportunity to learn more about the implementation, hear from others that have implemented Epic within the UK, and see the Epic solution in action.

Dr. Dermot Hughes, encompass’ Senior Responsible Owner (SRO), provided the opening remarks for the conference. He spoke of the transformational impact of standardising Health and Social care against evidence-based best practice. He emphasised that this represented healthcare transformation led by service and enabled by IT. Next, Richard Pengelly, the outgoing Permanent Health Secretary, and Peter May, the incoming Permanent Health Secretary, encouraged those in attendance to come together to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.

The most anticipated event of the conference was the guest speaker panel. It consisted of speakers from Royal Devon and Exeter and University College London Hospitals who have recently gone through Epic installs. The CMIOs and CNIOs from both Trusts shared lessons learned around the importance of the Super User programme, staff engagement, and go-live. They also shared that the first two months after go-live are challenging, but afterwards it is difficult to imagine life without Epic.

Attendees had the opportunity to see a demo of the Epic system, including the business intelligence function, which now has special reporting measures designed for social care. In addition, they received an overview of upcoming work and activities in the programme.

Dan West, the Chief Digital Information Officer for the Department of Health, provided the closing remarks to the half-day conference by tying together how the work of encompass fits in with the broader Digital Health and Care Northern Ireland (DHCNI) strategy.

Angela Reed, CNIO at South Eastern Trust, shared

It was clear the event was designed to support networking for HSC Trust teams. The opportunity to ask those ‘burning questions’ to colleagues who have been through the transformation process was invaluable. It was a great learning exercise, and gave us much food for thought, that has subsequently sparked many conversations in the Trust.

Reignite is the first part of an ongoing series of leadership engagement events. Stay tuned to hear more.
